This week is Cook Islands language week 2014. The theme for the week is ‘Te Rakei o Toku Iti-Tangata’ – Our language and our culture are the foundation of who we are.
Looking after cultural treasures is a significant part of Te Papa’s role in the community. We have a responsibility to look after and develop collections of cultural artefacts from across the islands of the Pacific. We share the stories of these cultural treasures through exhibitions, education programmes, events and publications.
Te Papa’s Pacific Cultures collections have over 7000 artefacts associated with the Cook Islands, from art works and photographs, adornments and carvings, to full size canoes and specimens of plants and animals. This week we will be sharing some of the collection highlights with you through our blog and via Twitter and Instagram, so make sure to follow us.
