Brian Brake grew up in Arthur’s Pass and retained a love of New Zealand’s mountains all his life. He took hundreds of photographs of South Island peaks, lakes and rivers. If you’re an alpine enthusiast, a keen tramper, or you know the South Island well, please take a look and let us know if you can name any of these mountains, rivers and lakes …

I’ve had an email about this blog too:
“#1 view looking south along main divide to Mt Tasman and Mt Cook.
#2 Looks like Lake Matheson near Fox Glacier. The mountain is Mt Tasman as seen from the West Coast.
#5 Mt Egmont / Taranaki
#7 Looks like Fox Glacier terminus and river.

4 is Kaikoura looking north towards the Seaward Kaikouras
5 is Mt Taranaki from the Pembroke road end
7 is Franz Josef glacier and Waiho River
thanks Alistair, it’s great to have the river name and the direction of the Taranaki shot …
No. 5 is definitely Mt Taranaki/Egmont. Vehicle looks like a Toyota Landcruiser. Someone might be able to date it. Man in yellow and green checked top has a patch on his shoulder. Is this a DoC badge. Did DoC rangers wear such tops? And when?
No. 7 may be river running from the Franz Josef Glacier.
Hi Athol, thanks for these tips – I’ll follow up with a DoC Ranger contact to see if we can tie the date down a bit more.
