As the museum sector wages war on the selfie stick, other museums including Te Papa have embraced the camera extension device. Taking a selfie is quickly becoming a part of the museum experience at Te Papa. We only need to check Te Papa’s Instagram account to see that our visitors are choosing to remember and share their experiences at Te Papa with a selfie or two… or three.
Our back of house tours in the Pacific Cultures storeroom have also been opportunities for visitors to take a few snaps. For our team the ‘storeroom selfie’ is a way to ensure that we are showcasing our collection and more importantly the communities behind them. From academics and artists to the Papua New Guinea Sevens team – these are the people whose stories and histories are bound to the taonga we take care of.
