April 1913: This month last century

100 years ago HMS New Zealand arrives in New Zealand (12 April 1913)

In March 1909, New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward announced that ‘the Dominion’ (New Zealand) was offering ‘the Motherland’ (Britain) the ‘free gift of … a first-class battleship’.

The Prime Minister thought that his offer to pay for a ship would allow New Zealanders to take ‘much greater pride and interest’ in the Empire’s defence. This proved to be enormously popular in New Zealand, and Parliament authorised the expenditure of up to £2 million on the ‘gift ship’.

The ship’s construction began in early 1910, and was completed in November 1912, having been given the name HMS New Zealand in 1911.

Her ‘thank you’ visit to New Zealand, during April and May 1913, was a triumph. The medal below was made to commemorate the occasion. Huge crowds flocked to see her – at Wellington on 16 April alone, over 15,000 people went aboard. She called at most of New Zealand’s major ports, where her visits inspired impressive demonstrations of patriotic fervour.

HMS New Zealand participated in several major naval battles during WWI. In 1919, she made another, farewell visit to New Zealand. The presentation casket (below) was presented to the wife of the Governor General at a ball that was held in the Wellington Town Hall to commemorate the event.

Artists’ Sketch Books.

 A sketchbook can be described as a supply of paper conveniently held in a folder or binding. It can be a small note book or a flamboyant colourful scrap book. Artists have used sketchbooks for centuries for recording ideas and thoughts, and once back in the studio they use these working drawings to produce finished works. Anything and everything can go into a sketchbook, which will develop into a collection of items, ideas and thoughts – not necessarily just visual impressions. It is for exercise and experimentation; developing as an artist, and for recording progress or passion for a subject. A sketch book can contain observations, including the documentation of the external world such as nature studies and sketches recording an artists travels, or invention that traces the artists’ digressions and internal journeys as they develop ideas. Te Papa has many sketchbooks that complement our works on paper collection. As a conservator I work on not only the finished art but the ephemera associated with the artist and their work. In the past sketchbooks lacked the status of finished artwork and may have been broken up to release drawings, or used only for its excerpts to accompany an exhibition. This attitude has changed and sketchbooks are now used in displays alongside finished art and are considered as informative as the final works in understanding the artist’s practice. I like how a sketchbook tells us more about the personality and habits of the creator, in whether it is tidy and ordered or soiled with cuttings and notations throughout – details about the development of ideas and concepts, through to scribbles, shopping lists and dates.

 This is a valuable exercise to not only stabilise the books and illustrations but to research the contents and make it available.  The degree of finish of the work found in sketchbooks varies widely from artist to artist, with some having simple drawings and lots of notes, others containing highly worked images. One aim of the project is to uncover more connections between our art collection and the sketchbooks. The first collection of books I cared for and treated was that of John Gully, who was born in England in 1819 and immigrated to New Zealand in 1852. With his many occupations; farmer, solider, surveyor and topographer, he was actively involved with settlement and exploration of New Zealand. Gully’s work with noted Geologist Julius Van Haast established him as a famous artist, with his paintings of West Coast New Zealand in 1863. He exhibited at the British Academy in 1871, which he felt was the highlight of his career. He became a full time artist in 1879 and concentrated solely on his painting. Gully’s sketch books were conveniently pocket-sized and could be described as more like note books with loose pencil sketches and observations of colours. They were well used, being soiled and stained and bearing the curve of his body. His personality is shown with comments about Sandfly Bay and friendly banter between travelling companions.

March 1940 – This month last century

73 years ago Prime Minister Michael Joseph Savage dies (27 March 1940)

Mickey Savage, as many New Zealanders fondly referred to him, was the country’s first Labour Prime Minister.

Australian-born Savage had arrived in New Zealand in 1907. He became the Labour MP for Auckland Central electorate in 1919.

Labour’s win 16 years later was a response to the hardship of the Great Depression and the limitations of private charity. The party won 55 seats out of a total of 80 and, as its leader, Savage became Prime Minister.

Under Savage, Labour promised more humane policies – ‘applied Christianity’ – and the right to a decent standard of living for all. The means to this ‘cradle to grave’ welfare philosophy was realised through Social Security legislation. 

Shortly after it was introduced, in August 1938, Savage collapsed. Emergency surgery revealed cancer of the colon. In just 19 months, the 68-year-old had succumbed to the disease.

After lying in state in Wellington, Savage’s body was taken by train to Auckland; around 200,000 people lined the route up to his grave at Bastion Point.

Michael Joseph Savage was probably New Zealand’s most beloved Prime Minister. Many felt a deep personal connection to him. His memorial gained special significance for those who lived through the Depression and found hope in Savage’s vision of New Zealand.

February 1943: This month last century

70 years ago, 48 Japanese prisoners of war are killed during a riot at the Featherston prisoner of war camp (25 February 1943)

From 1942, Japanese prisoners of war were brought to New Zealand and interned at the camp at Featherston, in the Wairarapa. This camp had previously been used as a military training camp during WWI.

The carved alligator (above) was made by an unknown prisoner at one of the camp’s so-called ‘hobby huts’. The other item (shown below) is an example of one of the tokens used at the camp. These tokens, plus craftwork made and bartered by the prisoners, were used to procure goods, as legal currency was not permitted in the camp.

The Japanese prisoners also had to work for ‘the enemy’ while they were incarcerated. This included vegetable-growing, furniture-making and shifting rocks. This work caused some prisoners considerable shame. On 25 February 1943, around 240 of them staged a sit down strike to protest against being made to work.

In the confusion and rioting that followed, prisoners began throwing stones and guards opened fire. As a result 48 Japanese prisoners and a New Zealand guard were killed. The other New Zealand guards were absolved of any wrong-doing at a military enquiry the following month. The court’s finding were not accepted by the Japanese Government.

This fatal event occurred when Japan was depicted as a threatening enemy in popular culture and print media (see poster below). However, war-time censorship and fears of retaliation helped to keep news of the clash from being widely circulated in the press.

January 1900 – This month last century

St Joseph’s Home for Incurable opens 113 years ago (29 January 1900)

This home for so-called ‘incurables’, in Buckle Street, Wellington, was an initiative set up by Reverend Mother Mary Joseph Aubert, with the help of Catholic nuns, the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion. Mother Aubert was the founder of this religious congregation, in 1892.

Prior to her work in Wellington with urban poor, she had gained notice for work in rural areas, especially with Maori in the Whanganui. This French-born nun was also well-versed in the use of Maori medicinal practices and herbs and had manufactured her own medicines, like the one shown below.

Her new venture began with 11 beds for men and women. From 1901, a soup kitchen was being run from the premises. Then, in November 1903 a crèche opened in nearby cottages for the babies of working mothers.

In October 1903, an article in the Evening Post called the Home a ‘resting place for the decrepit, the unfit, the unfit, the maimed people the outside world has no use for’. Mother Aubert and her Sisters were praised for their dedication ‘to lift[ing] fallen humanity from the slough of the world, no matter how they got there’.

The Home, which depended on public donations, was the first of its kind to open in New Zealand. A reliance on private charity was normal for many other similar institutions, such as the one shown above.

Although the Old Age Pensions Act had been passed in November 1898, it was not until after 1935 that the New Zealand government became the main provider of social welfare.

The Berry Boys – The First 50

For me the new year is an opportunity to stop for a moment and reflect on the achievements of the past year.  Today my focus has been on Te Papa’s Kiwi Faces of World War I project where we have been identifying soldiers in a collection of negatives taken at the Berry & Co Photography studio. The soldiers, their identities and stories have slowly but steadily been revealing themselves over the past year and now we have almost 60 soldiers identified in our group of 108 – we are half way!

The latest identification, Harry Spire Powell was helped along by an expert in uniforms and badges. Barry O’Sullivan’s knowledge of the fine details of military regalia has already helped with the identification of two soldiers. In this case it was the style of the ammunition bandolier that clinched it. Much of the work on this project wouldn’t have been possible without the help of our wonderful volunteers.  Genealogists Chris McLennan and Lynley Goldsmith, have been doing an amazing job of exploring the family histories of soldiers once identified, and Victoria University students, Coralie Clarkson and Matariki Williams have also generously volunteered their time to help identify soldiers and record their stories.

Once the first 50 were identified I decided it was a good moment to reflect on how the group represented the experiences of New Zealand’s World War I soldiers in general.

Amazingly, this relatively small but distinct group has proven to be very representative. Of the fifty identified thirty-seven survived, seven died in action and six died of an illness. A slightly higher percentage of the Te Papa group died overseas, about 24% including those that died of illness, compared to the national figure of about 18% or 18,500 out of the 103,000 that served overseas.

The geographical spread is also representative. Of those that were involved in active service, three went to Samoa, six fought at Gallipoli, eight were based in Egypt, and twenty-eight on the Western Front. Many of these soldiers fought in New Zealand’s most devastating battles including Passchendaele, the Somme and Messines.

While I’m pleased to know that this group of images reflects the big picture, it is still the personal stories that resonate the most. One incredible story that came to the fore last month was that of Private Lance Bridge who died of wounds obtained during the Gallipoli campaign.

Lance volunteered to take his wounded comrades back to safety early in the attack on Chunuk Bair but was badly wounded while doing so. He was taken down to the beach but refused to be taken to the hospital ship, until the many wounded who were worse off than he was had been looked after. He lay for two days in the hot sun, with only food or water given by passing soldiers. He was finally taken aboard ship, but died there and was buried at sea.  (From Hutchinson, G. December 1941: This month last century

Seventy one years ago, New Zealand declares war on Japan after the bombing of the US naval bases at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii (8 December 1941)

The bombing of Pearl Harbour set the Pacific War in motion. This event and Japan’s subsequent expansion through the Philippines, Thailand and the Malaysian peninsula, followed by the capture of the strategic British naval base at Singapore in February 1942 and the bombing of Darwin in northern Australia, intensified fears that New Zealand would also be attacked.

Home defence efforts intensified, while negative attitudes towards Japanese surfaced in benign every day objects, including parlour games, such as the puzzle shown above.

By 1941, the bulk of New Zealand troops had been posted to North Africa, one of the battle fronts shown of this comical map.

The leaders of New Zealand, the USA and Great Britain came to an agreement that they would stay there while American troops were deployed to the Pacific. New Zealand would be used as their base for staging operations as well as training, picking up supplies and ‘R&R’ (rest and recreation) for troops.

Tens of thousands of Americans found themselves living in camps in New Zealand between June 1942 and mid-1944. Crown Lynn manufactured virtually indestructible plates, mugs and bowls, like this one, for the Americans to use while they were there.

Many of the camps were located near main centres of population, and troops came into regular with locals who provided home comforts, and hospitality and entertainment in venues like the club in the photo, which was set up by the Red Cross in Masterton. This club’s cafeteria catered to American tastes by adding hamburgers and cheeseburgers on its menu.

Romance often blossomed between New Zealand women and the glamorous visitors. Around 1500 women married an American sweetheart. Ada Menzies might have been included this number, except that her American fiancé, First Lieutenant Hugh Leidel, died from wounds at Tarawa in the Pacific in November 1943 – a month after their engagement.

Hugh may have given Ada this brooch, featuring an optimistic ‘V’ for victory, while they were courting. It remained amongst her possessions until her death.

The influence of the wartime ‘invasion’ by the Americans on popular culture and international politics also continued long after the troops had departed from New Zealand.

This month last century: November 1919

93 years ago the first health camp opens at Turakina (25 November 1919)

New Zealand’s first health camp was founded by Dr Elizabeth Gunn.  The first group of 55 children stayed in tents for three weeks. Gunn had been a military doctor, and brought this experience with her to the running of the camps.

The camp was set up to boost the physical welfare of children, believed to be in danger of degeneration in the early decades of the twentieth century. The health camp idea spread around the country.

In the 1930s, their administration was taken over the government. The camps were a plank in social security legislation implemented by the First Labour Government.

Stamps to raise funds for the camps have been sold since 1929. Many of the stamps were designed by notable commercial artists and feature strong  graphic elements.

October 1935: This month last century

77 years ago the distribution of free milk to 5500 primary school children in Auckland begins (14 October 1935)

 This world first began as a temporary measure in Auckland for primary school children up to Standard 4 (year 6). The experiment, paid for the Auckland City Council, was closely watched by the government.

Initially, over 1500 litres of milk was distributed each day to 18 schools in the city.

Each child received half a pint (just under 300ml) of pasteurised milk in a glass bottle, like the one pictured above, with a cardboard lid. The lids had holes in them for drinking straws. Later the caps often carried promotional messages such as ‘Make a good start. Drink milk every morning’ and  ‘Full Marks to Pasteurised Milk’.

The free milk scheme was prompted by concerns about the low rate of consumption of milk, which meant that New Zealanders were degenerating into ‘a  B grade people’, according to Dr E B Gunson. Depression conditions and the associated poor diets and health of children were also causing anxiety.

This pilot scheme in Auckland was launched just before the election of the first Labour Government (led by Prime Minister Michael Savage, below), which became synonymous with the implementation of universal social security initiatives.

Concerned with creating equal access for New Zealanders to basic health, education and welfare, this government made free milk available to all New Zealand primary school children in 1937. This was complemented by other health measures for children such as free dental care at school dental clinics. School dental nurses continued to stress the importance of milk in children’s diets.

The school milk scheme continued under successful governments, both National and Labour, until October 1967.

A slice of Wellington life: the Berry & Co collection

Te Papa has a collection of nearly 4,000 glass plate and film negatives taken by the Wellington photography studio Berry & Co.  The studio was founded by William Berry in 1897, and operated in Cuba St until 1931.  The negatives are mainly portraits – of families, children, men and women, soldiers in uniform, the occasional pet – and are a wonderful resource for those interested in our history, or in the history of fashion.

 1,479 of our Berry negatives had been digitally imaged and put online over the past ten years, leaving us 2,397 more to photograph and upload to the web.  We’re keen to make more of this great historical resource available online, so we have started a mass imaging project, to photograph them in batches of 100 per week.  At this rate, it will take about six months to do them all.

Negatives can be difficult to ‘read’, so creating a positive digital image makes it easier for us to improve our catalogue data, for example by using clothing details to estimate the date the photograph was taken.

From cold storage to the studio

The negatives are all kept in our cold storage vaults, as low temperatures and humidity slow their deterioration.  They have to be brought up to room temperature slowly (acclimatised), otherwise there’s a risk that moisture will condense on the surface of the negatives, and damage or destroy the image.   

 We are using small chilly bins to acclimatise and transport the negatives.  These are handled very carefully, but as additional protection against bumps which could crack the glass, the bins are padded out with foam and pillows.

The negatives are placed on their edges in  the chilly bin, as this is the way they are designed to travel.  The bin is then left closed for five days, so the plates can slowly acclimatise to room temperature.

 In the studio

Once the plates have acclimatised, we move them to the photography studio and they are photographed on a light box by one of our imaging team.

When the photographs have been taken, the negatives are moved back to the cold storage vault.  As one set of negatives acclimatises another is being photographed, so there are always three sets of chilly bins on the move.

 So far we’ve photographed 500 of the negatives in the project, and they are being uploaded as we go.  Here’s a small selection.  I’ll be putting up more as the project continues, or you can keep an eye out for new additions on Collections Online.
