I have recently travelled down from Auckland for the Monet Exhibition and also to the F1 exhibition.

Hi Naomi,
Almost certainly it will be nothing to worry about. The two poisonous spiders we have are katipo and redback. They don’t really behave in the way you describe (webs appearing overnight in your backyard). Katipo is also very unlikely to live around homes and while the redback can, unless you’re in Central Otago it’s unlikely you have one of these.

However, if you still concerned and are able to take a digital photo of the webs or the spiders that make them I may be able to identify them for you. You can make contact via Te Papa’s general enquiry form:
