It’s been really heartening to see how NZ has dug deep to aid Samoa after the recent tsunami. TVNZ’s Good Morning programme broadcast live from Te Papa and other main centres on Wednesday to support the Red Cross’s appeal. In total, they raised $165,000 in just three hours!
Online giving website Givealittle has received over $100,000 in donations for the Red Cross as well and, earlier in the week, Givealittle approached Te Papa to see if we could help out with a innovative fundraising idea.
Donors to the appeal are given the option of leaving a comment and the crew at Givealittle approached artist Otis Frizzell to incorporate these messages of support into a special artwork to be gifted to the people of Samoa. Limited editions of the work will also be made available with the monies raised going to the Red Cross.

who is samoa is the painting gifted to?

Givealittle are still in the process of confirming when and to whom the painting will be given. When it is confirmed, I’ll make another post.

The mural is definately going to Samoa as a gift, however it’s eight meters long and two meters high so there’s only a limited list of possibilities that can house something that big.
I suppose doing the mural wasn’t all about who gets it either. In part it was just about raising awareness with some publicity for the final push for donations for the Samoa relief fund. I’m not sure how much the whole event actually raised, but I think it was well over $150,000 as I was finishing the mural. Pretty bloody awsome.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if one day in the future I went to Samoa for a holiday and saw bits of the mural being used as a door for a pig pen or the shutter on one of those crazy little stores they have avarywhere… But that’s cool too. As long as it’s being enjoyed or put to good use….

The Museum of Samoa has a big long wall. Can it go outside?
It can go outside, but realistically it would last longer and stay nicer inside. It would needs a propper protecting cote of something. The people at Givealittle were investigating costs etc
